My favorite Twitter Tools

July 24, 2009

I have been twittering for quite some time, I think I joined when there were less than 100,000 people doing it. Here are some tools I use with the twitter experience.

*  Tweet Deck – http://www.tweetdeck.com – this is a desk top twitter tool that allows you to see your several things at once. It makes searching twitter, updating your status, and making URL’s shorter very easy and fast.

*  Tweetlater – http://www.tweetlater.com – this tool allows you to schedule your tweets in advance. While twitter needs to bring the personal side, much of twitter is sharing information such as links, videos, articles, and blogs. If you are planning your messages, this tool allows you to do that.

*  PollDaddy – http://www.twitter.polldaddy.com – this is a very inexpensive way to do quick research. For fun or for business, you can ask a question and Poll Daddy will track the response.

More coming soon! Have fun in Twitterland.

Why should your business Twitter?

February 11, 2009

The new world of social media can be hard to figure out.  There are so many benefits to pushing through and learning these tools and how they can benefit your business.  You can follow me on Twitter @thescottmills.

I have learned some lessons since I began twittering.  Many from watching what other people do and how it has affected my behavior.  Here they are:

1.  Twitter can help you network with people you never have a chance to meet.  Presidents of multi-million, multi-national companies are on Twitter.  I recently sent one a direct message (something only known to Twitters) and he responded asking me to email him.  This was a door I never would have been able to open any other way, or at least not as easily.

2.  Content matters.  While some people may be interested in what I am having for lunch, this can get old.  Giving people information, whether tied to your business, or just a fun video you found is going to give you happier followers.

3.  If there is a link, more people will read your Tweets, and will click it.  A photo, website, or anything you link to, people will check it out.  Link to your business website, or a recent blog post on your own blog.

4.  Find people who are like minded, you will get ideas from them that will spur your own creativity.  Even Re-Tweeting great ideas you come across is a good practice on Twitter.

5.  Customer service can be increased with other Twitter users.  Just ask Comcast or Starbucks.  You can actually speak directly to someone who will do whatever it takes to give you a great experience.  It is easy to support or dog a company on twitter, or any social media platform for that matter.  They are more in tune to what helping someone will do for their business in the long run as happy customers talk about their good experience with their company.

There is more to learn, but it is a good practice to connect with customers and fans in new ways.  Make yourself accessible on Twitter, share some good ideas, have a little fun!
